POP at Marina Floating Platform

12 Dec 2015

This was probably my once-in-a-lifetime experience in attending a POP (Passing Out Parade).

In order to fetch my brother home easily, I decided to rent a Honda Jazz from AKA Car Rental over the weekend. Rental was $258, I think it was reasonable.

The POP was held at Marina Floating Platform. The crowd, heat and dazzle from the sun made me sweat throughout the event. Application of sunblock is a must.

But I got to say the daylight view was fantastic.

After the trained soldiers officially graduated from BMT and threw their caps, that's when all the family members and friends rushed down to meet their loved ones.

Just look at the amount of soldiers, it is almost impossible to be able to use your eyes to spot who you are supporting. I had difficulty and had to find a landmark to meet my brother.

Walked to Esplanade where I parked the car and it was a smooth, comfortable journey back home.

Essential Night Care Milk & CC Oil

I am pretty sure everyone of us will encounter one of these 5 hair issues at some point in our lives.

And you would probably look liked this when you do encountered any of those issues above.

Cruel Combing
For me, combing is definitely unavoidable as long as you have hair. You may have heard of people saying not to comb your hair while it is wet as it will cause more hair fall, but does that mean that combing when your hair is dry can prevent hair fall? The answer is NO because there is also friction when you comb, possibly result in hair knots aka tangles.

Spiteful Split Ends
My hair is long to chest level and I tend to get tangles and split ends. I had to use hair conditioner every day to try to save these old and dry ends. I would say it helps but could do be better.

Brazen Blow Drying
I stay up till late nights sometimes and by the time I get home to shower, I had to use a hair dryer so that I can turn in real soon. No matter how advanced the hair dryer is, it can't prevent the hair moisture from losing. The end result? Hair is dry outside and inside.

Hair Breakage
I visit the gym at least twice a week and obviously I had to tie my hair. I am aware that this causes stress to the hair and scalp due to the pulling of gravity. Ultimately, more hair fall and hair breakage.

Hair Dryness
Most of us work in air-conditioned areas for at least 8 hours and Singapore's weather can be a killer, causing us to head to shopping malls for cool air. And while our bodies enjoy, our hair cuticles weakened and loses moisture.

Essential has invented 2 hair saviours to save you from these hair stresses.

Allow me to introduce the first which is Essential Night Care Milk. This wonderful hair product protects hair from "Pillow Friction" which happens when you toss and turn while sleeping. I didn't realise this until I know of this product.

Essential Night Care Milk intensively repairs and moisturises hair in the wee hours while we sleep. I shall give it a test too see if it really works.

I pumped twice to have the product on my palm and applied it onto my hair starting from my ear length to the hair ends. I try to concentrate more on my hair ends since they are drier and tend to tangle.

You can tell that the product is thick and creamy but rest assure that it isn't greasy.

Let me show you how my hair looked like after I towel-dry it.

Frizzy and unmanageable right? Can you imagine if I try to comb, how many tangles will I get?

I applied 2 pumps of the Essential Night Care Milk and let's see if my hair does look better now.

I do see very visible improvements especially on my hair ends. Hair is more tame, looks  and feels smoother and healthier. No sense of oil on hair and palms. Pretty amazing right?

I also took a shot the next morning to see if my hair ends are still good. I didn't use a comb before I took these 2 pictures.

My hair ends still have slight shine on it although looking dry. I combed through without any tangles and merely a few strands of hair fell.

If I only use my fingers to comb my hair, no one would be able to tell too.

Other than Essential Night Care Milk, the 2nd saviour is Essential CC Oil. You must be wondering what CC stands for like I did. CC stands for Cuticle Care in this case and it is also multi-functional like the CC cream we used for make up. The product contains Hair Supplement Oil which is similar to hair's natural oil to allow you to have smooth and tangle-free hair all day.

I pumped twice into my palms, pressed my palms together to warm up the product then apply onto my hair working downwards from ear length. The product is watery so do be careful when you pump.

The product is also lightly floral-scented while providing benefits to hair cuticles.

Let me show you a photo of my hair ends before I apply the product on my dry hair.

My hair ends don't look so bad right? Wait till you see a close-up.

So how does my hair ends look like after I applied Essential CC Oil?

I didn't notice visible differences until I see the close-up shots. Hair is shiner and looks healthier.

What I also realised is that there is not very shine on my palms after application on hair. This is a good thing as I know the absorption into my hair ends are good and leaves hardly any greasiness.

The retail prices of Essential Night Care Milk and Essential CC Oil are $11.90 each and can be found at leading supermarkets and personal care stores.

If you have some time for entertainment, do play the game Essential's Mane Hero available on their Facebook too.

First & Only Patronage of Chicken King

This is another late post but it's about food this time.

Orchid Live Seafood has opened its first fastfood restaurant named Chicken King. It is located at 190 Toa Payoh Central, #01-530 and I went to try with my colleagues on a weekday evening

The restaurant could only accommodate about 30 people and note that spaces are really tight. We had to wait for about 15 minutes before we got a table.

Here's what we ordered to share.

Fried Squid

This is actually one of the best dishes we had in the restaurant. It is an enjoyable and appetisiing side dish. Crispy, a little spicy and sour.

Fried Popcorn Chicken with Rice & Salted Egg Yolk Popcorn Chicken with Rice

These 2 are the main dishes that reminded me of KFC's RIce Bucket which tastes better. Underneath the popcorn chicken is the buttery fried rice which is only a little fragrant.

Disappointing maybe because I was expecting too much.

Prawn Paste Chicken, Fries with Yam Sauce & Fries with Salted Egg Yolk Sauce

I was expecting the fries to be served separately from the sauces but they were poured in which made the fries became soggy. Worst of all, these 2 buckets of fries were on the counter top for at least 10 minutes before they were on our table. Imagine double the sogginess, fries just can't taste great.

Easily, the Prawn Paste Chicken taste better than the fries.

I have forgotten to take a photo of their famous Steven Chicken which we did order. As for the taste, it is similar to Orchid Live Seafood.

I wouldn't patronize Chicken King again for the prices I am paying. I would very much rather travel to their main restaurant Orchid Live Seafood.

Lunch at Whole Earth

14 Nov 2015

Ever since I have stopped working on weekends, I have more time with family and accompany my mum out for lunch.

Recently I checked out a vegetarian restaurant at Tanjong Pagar which have pretty good reviews. Whole Earth is conveniently located with just 5 minutes walk from Tanjong Pagar MRT. They serve vegetarian dishes without onion and garlic which is fantastic for my mum.

Here are the dishes we ordered.

Healthy Wolfberry Soup

The herb Codonopsis Pilosula aka Dang Shen was added into the soup. It is light and the small portion ($9.00) is enough for 2 pax.

Olive Fried Rice

We opt for this rather than white rice since we came all the way here. Fragrant, filling for 2 and best to eat while it is hot.

Oats with Tofu

I like anything with fried oats so this has got to be my favourite dish. I can just eat this with white rice and I will feel like the happiest soul. The tofu is cripsy on the outside and soft on the inside. Even the curry leaves taste so good. Yes there is a few slices of chilli padi but it is hardly spicy.

Mango with Tamarind Fish

My mum likes this dish the most. The appetising sweet and sour gravy is especially good with white rice. The green thin slices garnish are green mango, not cucumber. The fish have been deep fried then served with the gravy.

We spent about $65 including a hot cup of lemongrass drink and soft drink. Maybe a little on the pricey side but I would definitely be back to try other dishes.

Eyelash Extensions

25 Oct 2015

I am so glad that Gardenails has re-opened. It is now located at 11 Woodland Close, #10-48, Singapore 737853 which is about 15mins walk from Admiralty MRT.

Other than nails, they are now venturing into eyelash extensions so if you are keen to be their model and let them practise, do contact them. I went to get mine done and here's the outcome.

The eyelash extensions look natural which suits me since I wear glasses on most days. My eyelashes definitely look thicker, longer and curvier. I shall observe and see how many days I can maintain it.

I also did gelish manicure with nail art at $50.

That's about it for a Sunday.

Review: Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Gel

I used to think that only the Sun will cause pigmentation but I am so wrong. The technology devices I face everyday contributes too! When I am outdoor, I will try to use an umbrella to shelter but how about indoor? This is when the sunblock becomes our hero.

Let me share with you the Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Gel SPF50+ PA++++. And yes I did it on purpose to shoot this photo with polka dots as the background.

This sunblock provides the user with maximum protection against the harmful UVA and UVB rays from the Sun. SPF50 is sufficient to block off 98% of the UVB rays, please avoid using sunblock with higher SPF as they might clog your pores from what I know. PA++++ protects against UVA rays and right now, PA++++ is the highest standard.

It is infused with hyaluronic acid & citrus extract to hydrate the skin and keep it fresh. Best of all, this product can be applied on face and body. Sounds like a wonderful product to bring along to the beach. Do remember to apply it at least 20 mins before leaving the house.

The texture of the sunblock is lighter than I expected and really easy to blend. No worries of having a white patch if you applied too much like what I did below.

After application, what you get is a smooth finish and non-sticky. I did feel a slight cooling sensation during application too. This is an advantage to wake me up in the morning.

Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Gel is retailing at $18.90 and a bottle of it contains 90ml. You can get it at leading pharmacies, supermarket, hypermarket, departmental stores, beauty stores and selected minimarts.

Join me to protect ourselves against pigmentation like freckles and wrinkles now.

My Recent Eats

I haven't been blogging about personal life for a long time. This would be just a post to share which are the new restaurants I have been to lately.

Greendot # #01-08 Westgate

I was recommended by a friend to try this vegetarian restaurant and indeed it was not bad. The portions were big and ingredients were generously given. My mum tried the laksa which I felt it was a little too spicy for me. I had the herbal soup with brown rice and I had difficulty finishing by myself.

The Laneway Market @ 266 Tanjong Katong Road

HM and I headed to the WeFlea on 12th Sep and this is how we know about this beautifully decorated cafe. For main course, I had the Sous Vide Egss ($16.00) which consists mainly of hasbrown and poached eggs, I tried their signature Iced Earl Grey Latte which is not too thick to cause me palpitations. We shared the truffle fries with grated parmesan cheese which cost $12.00. There was no GST and service charge, the prices were affordable.

Hai Nan Hometown Curry Rice @ 505 Jurong West Jurong West Food Centre, #01-41

I have previously talked about this curry stall and I headed back with colleagues. Sadly the curry chicken was sold out. We had curry vegetable, curry fish and curry pork ribs. Yes they are all curry but the tastes are different. The curry fish is slightly sour probably due to tomato. The curry vegetables wasn't as thick as curry pork ribs. Overall, we still had our cravings satisfied.

Old Boys Gallery @ 67 Kampong Bahru Road

The ladies and I had our dinner on 21st Sep at a ex-schoolmate's brother's restaurant. Some of their signature dishes were Manster Beef Burger, Roast Pork Aglio Olio, Spam Chips, OBG Wings and OBG Crabcake. Don't the names already made your stomach growl? I had the Roast Pork Carbonara as seen above. The carbonara was just right, not too thick tor a non-carbonara fan. The Spam Chips are a must try, super crispy and addictive. The restaurant only serves craft beers so you know where to head to for a night of chill?

Do You Prefer J or K?

If you follow me on instagram, you will know how much I love Japanese cuisine compared to Korean cuisine. At least every fortnightly, I would be posting pictures of either ramen, sushi or sashimi. In fact, I just had ramen and gyozya yesterday.

Notice how thick the Tonkotsu soup is?

And talking about their culture, I am pretty sure most girls would want to try on the traditional Japanese garment named kimono at least once in a lifetime. I have yet to get the chance to wear it but I definitely will if I go to Japan.

One thing that I noticed about Japanese make up, they emphasize more on their eye make up. Falsies and glittery eyeshadows to make their eyes look bigger and brighter.

Freshly breaded in-store with a special batter, these juicy wings are cooked to crispy perfection and coated in your choice of two bold flavours – choose between the Japanese-inspired tangy yet savoury Umadare and the Korean-inspired sweet and spicy Yang Yeum. Who will be crowned king of the wings? You decide.

Pick a side and be part of KFC’s greatest wing-off. Hashtag #kfcoishii to support Umadare or #kfcmashisoyo to support Yang Yeum on Instagram!

I vote for #kfcoishii. What about you?

Review: Palmer's White & Even

Do you have pigmentation problems like freckles and uneven skin tone like I do? If you do, please watch the video below and read on for me to introduce Palmer's White & Even Dark Spot Corrector.

Palmer's White & Even range contains ingredients which are potent yet gentle to reduce hyper-pigmentation. Palmer's came out with the Whitening & Tone Enhancing Complex which is made of:

1) Cocoa Butter    - smooths marks and scars
2) Soy                   - restores luminosity
3) Synovea           - lightens age spots
4) Vitamin C          - brightens skin
5) Licorice extract - improves skin tone and texture
6) Niacinamide      - targets unwanted discolouration

It has been found that daily usage of the Palmer's White & Even range will lighten the surface skin cells and produce more even skin tone within 3-5 days. The deeper skin layers will be inhibited to over-produce melanin. As skin cells rise to the surface, you will have a more even skin tone within 4-6 weeks. Do note that all these are subjected to age, health and sun exposure.

The products does not contain parabens, harsh dyes and fragrances just to name a few. Best of all, it is suitable for all skin types and pocket-friendly.

Enough of words, let's take a look at the product itself.

The texture isn't too thick for a serum and it looks like there is glitter in it.There is a cooling sensation upon application which is good for Singapore's weather.

It gets absorbed fast and leaves no stickiness. Skin feels slightly more moisturized and smooth.

There is also noticable glitter which I have yet to find out why.

Time to try it on my face now.

I didn't see any significant difference after the first try. I didn't feel the cooling sensation on my face like I did on my hand but I did see the 'glitter' on my face.

Maybe the results will really only be significant after daily usage for at least 3-5 days.

The second product I tried was the Dark Circle Correcting Eye Treatment.

It comes with a safety plastic cap in case the product gets accidentally squeezed an leaked.

A closer look at the nozzle.

Usage of this product is easy. Squeeze out a little of the product on the metal nozzle and glide it gently onto your upper and lower eyelid. This is like an eye massage and it does feel good especially if the metal nozzle is cold.

Let's see the before and after.

Again, I didn't notice significant difference after first usage. I do feel slight tightness around the eye area which is a good thing if it can lift the eyelid area.I looked like I applied eye glitter due to the sheer luminizing brighteners in the product.

The Palmer's White & Even range can be found in Watons, Guardian, BHG, Robinsons, John Little, Essentials Pharmacy, Nishino Pharmacy, all leading pharmacies, departmental and cosmetics stores. The Dark Spot Corrector is $29.90 (30ml) and the Dark Circle Correcting Eye Treatment is $22.90 (15ml).
